Is ‘world-class’ Declan Rice the best defensive midfielder on the planet?
Nice read.

Definitely at 22 year on year improving, as long as West Ham remain a top 5 team and see Europe more often, I can´t see him moving soon.

Best I know of, which isn't quite the same thing.

I love the way that he is actually quite attack-minded, both in setting up attacks and joining in.

And, at only 22, he is STILL getting a bit better and better with every game he plays, as he has done since his debut.

Scary talent.

like soucek, he's a box to box midfielder. it's why it works so well

He's RIGHT up there, and he's improving week on week.

Most people only get to see 30% of what he's capable of from just watching England, seen as they don't appear to give him much freedom.

He's tall, fast, strong and has great touch and vision. Almost always wins possession, almost always retains possession, and knows whether to hit the short simple pass or a more ambitious one. His timing and reading of the game is superb.

When he's got the ball, it's a bit like watching Neo in the Matrix. It seems like he's got so much time and the game is in slow motion for him.

One of the best in the last 30 years to put on a West Ham shirt.

Don't forget Kalvin Phillips. Leeds fans are quite insistent.

Spurs fans were telling us Harry wanks was twice the player a long time ago. Love it :)

Phillips may be the best midfielder in his division next season...

Especially if Newcastle spend a lot wisely in January.

If he was told to go forward with the ball by Southgate we would have won the Euros .

I think so too. He had to give up so much of his game to sit deep and accommodate the players around him. (And drop to make the extra centre back) I hope he's on Kalvin Phillips' Christmas card list, because that bloke owes him a hell of a lot for freeing him up and making him look so good for England.

I read that article in The Standard tonight, which stemmed from John Terry claiming he is.

Universe, I'd say.

Is he a defensive midfielder? I'd say he has evolved into a box to box midfielder - he doesn't simply win the ball and give it to a more talented team mate, when he gets the ball and seconds later he's taken it from a defensive position to the edge of the opposition box.

I don't see anyone better than him at the moment. Starting to dominate games.

Rice is our Lothar Matthäus. The nearest player to him is Camavinga at Real Madrid. And it’s highly unlikely he get the playing time to develop into as good a player as Rice is.
